  • Web Hosting

Does HostingKey provide a control panel to manage my web host?

Yes, Hostingkey provides an excellent user interface control panel called cPanel.
cPanel is an industry leading control panel with all the required tools to manage your web hosting effectively.

What is a dedicated IP? What’s the difference with a shared IP?

When you got a dedicated IP address you have a unique IP address that is not being shared with anyone else.
Why is having a dedicated IP beneficial?

    1. SNI (Server Name Indication) that allows multiple SSL certificates on a shared IP is incompatible with some old browsers.
    2. A dedicated IP is required for certain 3rd party applications / scripts.
    3. Higher stability; IP is not being shared with others.
    4. Easier to handle DDOS mitigation, as opposed to shared IP’s which cover many accounts.
    5. Email sender’s (SMTP) reputation.

How can I monitor my web space and data traffic utilization?

You can check your current utilization of web space and/or bandwidth by logging into your cPanel account. These statistics are shown on the left side menu.

Am I able to upgrade my webhosting account if I need to?

Yes! HostingKey allows you to upgrade your account any time you wish!
We will only charge you the price difference between your existing hosting plan and your new hosting plan.

How do I transfer files to my web host?

In order to transfer your files to your web host you have to install an FTP client or use the web-based File Manager in cPanel.

Our recommendation for a free and excellent functioning FTP client is FileZilla.
You can get this client from https://filezilla-project.org/

    Your FTP login details:

  • Virtual Private Server (VPS)

What is a Virtual Private Server (VPS)?

A Virtual Private Server, or VPS, is virtually independent of the actual hardware and is private because the file system and processes are kept completely separate from all other virtual private servers on the node.

The kernel and/or operating system normally interacts directly with the hardware components. In a VPS the virtualization software intercepts all these requests, queues them and executes their interpretation.

Do I need a Virtual Private Server?

If you are looking for an alternative to a dedicated server or have outgrown the needs that shared hosting can satisfy, then a Virtual Private Server is most likely very suitable for you.

Our Virtual Private Server packages are fully flexible and very affordable. Have a look at our premade VPS Packages or specify a VPS package according to your exact needs by using our custom VPS tool.

How long does it take to set up a VPS account?

Our VPS packages are activated immediately after successfully completing the payment of your order!
After your payment has been confirmed, you will receive an email with all the information you need to get started.

Can I upgrade my VPS package?

Yes, you are able to upgrade your VPS package 24/7.
    Simply:

    • go to your Client Area's menu -> Services Menu -> My Services.
    • Choose your VPS account.
    • Under "Actions", click on Upgrade/Downgrade Options.

    That's all it takes!

Do I have access to a firewall?

You will be given the option to configure the IP tables rules in order to enhance the security of your server.

Will my OS installation be deducted from my available disk space?

Yes, but(!) we are providing plenty of storage space for each VPS plan.
The web space required to install your OS roughly accounts for 1 GB or less.

    Can I share my VPS?

Yes, you are allowed to share a VPS server with other people. You can host multiple websites, projects and businesses for multiple individuals on a single VPS server.

The VPS is yours and it's up to you if you want to subdivide the VPS, as long as the services you run on the VPS do not violate our Terms and Conditions.

Can I add an additional IP Address to my VPS?

    Yes, that’s possible!

    Simply:

    • go to your Client Area -> Services Menu -> My Services.
    • Choose your VPS account.
    • Under "Actions", click on Upgrade/Downgrade Options.

You've now arrived on the page which gives you the ability to add extra IP addresses!

Does HostingKey have a "Control Panel" to manage my VPS Server?

  • SSL Certificates

    What is SSL?

SSL is a widely used web standard protocol to encrypt data transfers between a website and its end users. In many cases data is being sent without protection over the internet which can lead to theft of sensitive user information (such as payment details).

SSL provides security for end users of a website by ensuring that private customer data sent to the website, such as payment information, is kept fully confidential.

To make use of the SSL protocol for your website, you are required to buy an SSL certificate. Click here for the SSL certificates HostingKey has to offer!

How can I verify that I am browsing an SSL secured website?

When you are visiting a website starting with https:// instead of http://, you are browsing the website through the SSL protocol.
You can check information about the website and issuing authority by clicking on the little security icon in front of the website address.

Why do I need SSL security for my website?

If you want your business, organization and/or project to provide a professional and confidential experience for your customers, you will need to setup an SSL certificate for your website.

Also, when you are collecting sensitive information of any kind from your customers, you should get an SSL certificate to ensure the security of your data by encryption.
In some countries it’s even required to use such security while processing financial and customer information.

    What is a SSL Certificate?

An SSL certificate installed on your web server will make sure that any information from or to the website is encrypted, thus making the data nearly impossible to be intercepted or stolen.
The SSL certificate also displays the identity of the domain owner and the authority who issued the certificate and verified the identity.

SSL stands for 'Secure Sockets Layer'.
This layer is located between the Transport Control Protocol (TCP) and Internet Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).
SSL uses the public and private key from the encryption system RSA.

Is it best to get the SSL Certificate from HostingKey?

If you have purchased a certificate directly from HostingKey, naturally we can help you to implement it!

We can prevent your ending up in a situation where you are installing the certificate yourself without having a clue.

We provide SSL certificates for very competitive prices, which are often cheaper than buying your certificate directly from the supplier.

How can I get my SSL Certificate?

You can purchase your SSL certificate directly on the website under the 'SSL' section in the menu.
We highly recommend an SSL certificate because they are absolutely essential for creating the trust you need on the internet.

    What does CSR means?

CSR stands for 'Certificate Signing Request'.
This signing request contains all the information about the individual or corporation requesting the certificate.
This is the same information which will eventually be added to the certificate itself along with a public key.

After a successfully processed order the CSR information will be sent to the SSL supplier by us. The vendor needs this in order to generate the SSL certificate.

Can HostingKey help me to install my SSL certificate?

Yes! If you have ordered your SSL certificate through our website, you can contact us to get your certificate installed without any additional costs!

After submitting and paying for my order, how long will it take for me to receive my SSL certificate?

After your payment has been processed successfully we will immediately order the SSL certificate for you from one of our suppliers.

The time required to complete this process depends on the authentication level of your SSL certificate.

    Estimated times of issuance:

Domain validation: less than 15 minutes
    Organization validation: 1-2 business days
    Extended validation: 1-10 business days

  • Domain Names

Who owns the domainname when I register it at your company?

When you have registered a domain name with HostingKey, you are the sole owner of this particular domain name.
You can add zones, modify zones, edit name servers and transfer your domain name whenever you wish!

How long does it take before my domain name is active?

Once you've successfully paid for a domain name registration (or transfer), the domain will be provided instantly.

However, as all DNS related services need to update their DNS records to reflect the existence of the new domain, it takes roughly 8-24 hours before your domain name is accessible throughout the Internet.

Can I transfer my domain name from another domain registrar to HostingKey?

Yes, you are able to transfer your domain name to HostingKey. You can transfer your domain individually or while placing an order to purchase a new web host.

When you want to transfer a domain individually, go to the Client Area and select ‘Go to Order Form’ under 'Order New Services'. Then click on ‘Choose Another Category’, and click on 'Transfer Domain'. You will be asked to enter your domain name, and eventually the EPP authorization code.

When you are submitting an order for a hosting service, select the ‘Transfer your Existing Domain Name’ bullet and fill in your existing domain name. You will be asked to provide the EPP authorization code.

After a successful submission your domain name will be transferred to us.

What is an EPP (Authorization code)?

When you are transferring a domain name from one registrar to another, you will be asked for an EPP authorization code.
When the domain name has been registered for the first time, the EPP code has been generated by the registrar. You can retrieve the EPP code from your current registrar.

How long does it take for my domain to update a DNS zone?

The propagation process throughout the internet can take between 1-24 hours after you have edited a zone in relation to your domain name.
During this period your domain name is still linked to the old DNS record.

Can I register a TLD that is not listed on your website?

You can register nearly all available TLDs out there!

Simply send us a ticket in the support center with the domain name you wish to register and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

    Who or what is ICANN?

ICANN stands for Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.
This is a non-profit organization that was formed to allocate IP addresses, manage domain name/root server systems and assign protocol parameters.

'WWW': can I access my domain name without it?

Yes! You can access your website with or without the 'www' prefix. Additionally, you can set up a subdomain and create a prefix of your own preference!

Example: [http://test.yourdomainname.com] or [http://airport.yourdomainname.com] or just [http://yourdomainname.com] is acceptable; whichever you like.

  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

What is the difference between Black hat and White hat SEO?

White hat SEO is using a range of tactics which are completely safe to use and have long term positive effects on your website’s position in the search engine. These are tactics that require hard work, good analytical insight and steadfastness.

The use of Black hat SEO tactics is often discouraged or even prohibited by search engines. They might give a short and quick result but it often leads to your site being penalized by the search engine, which then completely deletes your site from all search results.

    How do search engines work?

Search engines are using bots that follow links inside web pages in order to build an index of each specific page.
When you enter a search query, the search engine replies with the most relevant web pages from their indexed database and sorts them based upon several rank determining factors.

What are Google Panda, Penguin and Hummingbird?

Google has chosen certain names for significant updates of its search engine ranking algorithm.
With the Panda update Google improved the ability of high-quality content to be found more easily.

When Google came with the Penguin update, most websites using Black hat SEO techniques to improve their ratings were heavily penalized. With Google’s Hummingbird update the use of Black hat SEO techniques has completely backfired and they are now considered completely useless.

Why isn’t my site listed on the search engine?

There may be multiple reasons why your site is not listed in the search results. It’s important to find out whether or not your website has been indexed by the search engine. You can check this with 'site: YOURWEBSITEURL' (example for Google).

So for example: if 'site: test.mywebpage.com' returns the message “Did not match any documents” then your website might have been removed due to violations of Google’s TOS, or it hasn’t been indexed yet.

If your website doesn't come up in the search results there is probably still a lot of SEO work to do!

Do pages that are protected with a password get indexed?

No, search engines’ crawling bots are not able to index any password protected pages.

How can I prevent a page from being listed in a search engine?

You can prevent a page from being indexed by placing a robots.txt document in your website’s top-level directory (where your index file is usually located).

    robots.txt example:>
User-agent: * (The asterisk defines all crawlers)
    Disallow: /sample-directory/>
    Disallow: /a-page.html>
    Disallow: /pictures/logoofyoursite.jpg>

To prevent all pages from being crawled:
    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /

Does more traffic improve my search engine ranking?

No, a website doesn’t receive a higher ranking just because it’s receiving an increased amount of visitors on the page.
Why? Search engines don’t have complete insight in the number of visitors your website is receiving. They do have insight in how much traffic comes through their links to your website, but this is something entirely different.

How come somebody else is getting a different search result with the same search query?

There are cases where somebody else is receiving a different result while using the same search query in the same search engine.
Google for example is trying to personalize search experiences as much as possible by using all kinds of factors. This is the reason why the results might be different every now and then.

After implementing an SEO package, how long before I can expect to see improvements?

This depends on many factors related to your website.
Improvements can be seen in a matter of days or a few months. The speed of improvement depends on a lot of things. A few of those are:

    • The types and amount of changes made
    • Crawl ratio from the search engine
    • The (old) state of the website
    • * Keyword competition in a particular niche

    What is long-tail traffic?

There are short-tail keywords and long-tail keywords. For example: the combination 'PHP Tutorial' is a short-tail keyword and 'easy PHP tutorial for beginners' is a long-tail keyword. Traffic you receive from long-tail keywords is called long-tail traffic.
In general, long-tail traffic has far less competition than traffic based on short-tail keywords.

What is a search engine friendly web design?

When it comes to certain types of content such as videos and images, it’s difficult for the search engine to create a proper index of the website.
So to build a SEO friendly design the website will be made in such a way that it will be easily accessible for search engine spiders and thus for easy crawling and indexation.

Does the length of the content make a difference?

In general, search engines favor longer pieces of content (250-350 or more words). However, the quality of the content remains much more important than the quantity!

Is having duplicate content a big problem?

If you are having two or more pages or short pieces of text with the exact same identical content then there is a high chance that none of the pages are indexed on Google.

Note: duplicate content can happen in a variety of ways such as inconsistent page links or adding a print friendly version of the page.

We highly recommend avoiding such cheap solutions.

These methods of development provide serious limitations regarding the quality and effectiveness of your application, often resulting in a very poor and unstable product.

We firmly believe that the success of your application is highly determined by its quality.
